Legacy Built on Ice: How Mr. Freeze’s Gerry Santos and Next-Gen Leadership Are Cooling the Nation and Warming Lives
MANILA, Philippines.
From humble beginnings in a rented apartment with just a borrowed truck to a nationwide network of strategically located manufacturing plants, Mr. Freeze has solidified its status as a household and commercial staple. For over two decades, the company has delivered more than just ice, it has delivered resilience, dedication, and community impact under the visionary leadership of the “Ice King” himself, Founder and CEO Mr. Gerald “Gerry” Santos.
This remarkable journey took center stage as Mr. Gerry Santos and the next generation of leadership graced the cover of TopNewsAsia for its October 2026 issue.
To celebrate the feature, TopNewsAsia spearheaded by its President and Editor-in-Chief Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas, hosted an exclusive magazine signing event at the National Book Store SM North EDSA branch, drawing crowds, fans, and business enthusiasts eager to meet the family behind the legacy. All throughout the magazine signing event, Mr. Freeze proved to be remarkably cool and down-to-earth, cracking jokes, sharing lighthearted stories, and keeping the entire session lively and engaging for everyone present. And by the way, the event was graced by the presence of one of the country’s most versatile actor, Mr. Albert Martinez, playing that moment as the ever-supportive best friend of Mr. Freeze.
More Than a Product: A Foundation of People and Perseverance
While ice is the tangible product that cools homes and businesses across the country, Mr. Freeze has always been built on something much warmer: perseverance, relationships, and deep-seated partnerships.
Starting the business with just a meager ₱150,000 and drawing branding inspiration from the iconic Batman villain, Gerry Santos spent decades personally driving day-to-day operations. Now, he is smoothly transitioning management to his children. “Before, I was working 100%; now only 10%, and 90% is with them,” Gerry shared during the Q&A session. “I’m so lucky that they really love to work for me and innovate the business.”
During his parting words at the event, Mr. Santos made it a point to express his heartfelt gratitude to his partners, friends, family, and employees, emphasizing:
“Mr. Freeze grew with the business partners, and we are still growing with them.”
Building on that foundation, Philip Santos, President of Mr. Freeze, noted that stepping into leadership is not merely about inheriting a thriving enterprise, it is about honoring something he watched being built from the ground up. Both Philip and his sister Janina gained valuable corporate experience outside the family business before joining. Upon entering Mr. Freeze, they intentionally started at the ground level, working as cashiers, checkers, and handling clerical tasks, to understand every layer of operations before moving into executive roles.
Addressing the evolution of the company, Philip shared:
“Today, we’ve grown into a much larger organization, with more plants, more employees, and a more structured and professional approach. We are continuously improving how we operate, embracing new technologies, and developing our people to support the growth.”
Philip also cited the single best piece of advice he received from his father: “If you can do your task today, do it already because you don’t know what tomorrow brings.”
Measuring Success by Lives Touched and Nation-Building
Echoing her father’s and brother’s sentiments, Janina Santos-Ortico, Chief Financial Officer and Head of Administration, emphasized that the company’s true achievements cannot be quantified solely by sales figures, market reach, or the number of manufacturing plants. True success is measured by people, discipline, and shared growth.
Reflecting on the milestone, Janina noted:
“This year, we have just reached our 21st year in the business. For me, every year is considered a milestone because every year we employ more people, allowing us to support more families.”
Janina highlighted that operational discipline, such as ensuring on-time payroll, s critical because hundreds of families rely on the company. She proudly pointed out that employee growth is a core value, with former cashiers and baggers rising through the ranks to become supervisors.
For Gerry Santos, the true heart of Mr. Freeze lies in nation-building and empowering micro-entrepreneurs. Shifting focus over the years, 90% of their market now supplies urban micro-distributors. By helping tricycle drivers set up micro-ice dealerships delivering to neighborhood sari-sari stores, Mr. Freeze has enabled partner vendors to grow from operating a single tricycle to managing fleets of ten, putting their children through school.
To further lower the barrier to entry, Mr. Freeze allows aspiring entrepreneurs to start with minimal capital using just a bicycle and sidecar. Additionally, through the “Mr. Kasosyo” program, the company extends low-interest loans to help loyal distributors acquire brand-new motorcycles and delivery trucks.
Tackling Challenges with Innovation, Preparedness, and Humor
Running a 24/7 manufacturing and distribution network naturally brings daily hurdles, from equipment maintenance to manpower logistics. Yet the family approaches these challenges with teamwork, structured protocols, and a refreshing sense of humor.
When asked about preparations for the looming Super El Niño and potential water crises, Gerry immediately drew laughs from the crowd by joking, “We will close down!” On a serious note, he outlined concrete contingency plans: constructing additional ice plants ahead of summer and utilizing deep wells outside Metro Manila to guarantee 50% to 60% of supply during severe shortages.
He added that operating in a tropical country ensures continuous demand: “Ice is a lifetime business in the Philippines, the only time it gets removed is if it snows here!”
Looking Ahead
The magazine signing at National Book Store served not only as a celebration of the Santos family’s commemorative TopNewsAsia cover feature, but also as a powerful testament to Filipino entrepreneurship.
Gerry Santos reflected that being “Mr. Freeze” is ultimately about connecting with people, staying humble, inspiring others, and having fun along the way. As Mr. Freeze steps boldly into its third decade with Philip and Janina spearholding technological continuity and modern management, the transition proves that a business anchored on family values, employee welfare, and community empowerment will always endure.
The October 2026 issue of TopNewsAsia marks the magazine’s first-ever 3-cover issue, three covers, three generations, three stories, united by one vision built on ice.
